嘉数バンタ [嘉数]

 嘉数バンタは、かつて豊見城グスクや瀬長島とともに「豊見城三景」に並び称された景勝地である。

 バンタとは沖縄の言葉で「崖」や「端」を意味し、嘉数集落の西端に位置したこの地からも、眼下に広がる漫湖や豊見城の古城のたたずまい、湖面に浮かぶヒララス森（知念森）や奥武山、ガーナ森、さらに遠くには那覇港や東シナ海が一望できる絶景の場所であった。とりわけ夕映えの景色は素晴らしく、長嶺小学校の校歌にも
「嘉数バンタの 夕眺め 入り江に 浮かぶ城の址」
と歌われ、当時の風光明媚な様子を讃えている。

 琉球王府時代、バンタに隣接する嘉数集落内には、王家の分家筋にあたる豊見城御殿の別荘が置かれ、別荘をおとずれた要人たちがくつろぐ憩いの場所でもあったと伝えられている。

 写真は戦前の嘉数バンタでくつろぐ人々を写したものである。左側の枝ぶりも見事な大きな松は、戦前のこの場所におけるシンボル的存在で、嘉数バンタにはこうした松の木やソテツが周辺に群生し、広大な草地と隣接する嘉数集落の馬場（ンマイー）とあわせて、字民の憩いの場所として、また那覇や近郊の人々、学生たちの行楽や遠足の場所などによく利用されたという。

 In the past, together with Tomigusuku Gusuku and Senaga Island, the Kakazu Banta was known as one of ‘Tomigusuku Sankei,’ the three scenic points in Tomigusuku. In the Okinawan language, banta means ‘a cliff’ or ‘an edge,’ and the Kakazu Banta was located on the western edge of the Kakazu settlement, offering a spectacular, panoramic view. The picturesque scenery was enhanced with the serene atmosphere of the Manko wetland and the ancient castle of Tomigusuku, where Chinenmori wood and Onoyama appeared to float on the surface of the lake, and further in the distance were Naha Port and the East China Sea. The scenery was especially breathtaking at sunset, and even today, the beauty of the view is referred to in a phrase in the school song of Nagamine Elementary School.

 During the age of the Ryukyu Kingdom, adjacent to the Banta and within the Kakazu ettlement were villas for a branch of the royal family. It is said that that Kakazu Banta was a place for leisure and relaxation for the prominent visitors.

 The photograph shows people relaxing at Kakazu Banta before the Battle of Okinawa. Kakazu Banta was blessed with spectacular scenic beauty and, as shown in the photograph, lush greenery from the trees and fields. The Banta was an oasis for the people of the Kakazu settlement and was a popular destination for fun and relaxation for those visiting from Naha and its neighboring areas, and for school children, it was a favorite field trip location.
