馬場と十五夜[保栄茂]

 馬場（ンマイー）は県内各地にあった琉球競馬（走る美しさを競う競馬）を始め、地域の大きな祭りや集まりで使われた広場である。豊見城市内にもかつては9ヵ字に存在していたことが分かっている。その中のひとつである保栄茂の馬場は、地域の一大行事である十五夜（豊年祭）などが行われ、現在でも往時とほぼ変わらない風景を今に伝えている。

 馬場は元々ナカミチ（市道24号線）にあって、時期は不明であるが、現在地に移動したと伝えられる。戦前は、馬場の東南側の端に溜め池のンマイーグムイやンマイーヌチビ製糖所があり、西側にはンマイー製糖所とカナチグチ製糖所もあった。また当時はサトウキビや稲・大豆など農作物の収穫時には作業場や収穫物を干す場所としても利用された。東南側にはコージャーヤー（龕屋）が、馬場のスタンド中央には御大典記念碑（1928年造）も現存している。

 馬場で行われる十五夜は、毎年旧暦八月十五日～十六日に行われる保栄茂の一大行事である。豊見城市内で唯一のミルク神を始め、大きな旗頭、綱引きに伝統舞踊等が披露される。とくに六年毎の卯年と酉年はマールドゥシ、アタイドゥシ、ニンマール、大豊年祭等と呼ばれ、より盛大に行われ、そのときにだけ行われる演目に「マチ棒（巻ち棒）」がある。

 マチ棒は、保栄茂の男性が参加する集団の棒演技である。マチ棒の型は「タカマチ」といわれ、大空を雄々しく旋回する鷹の群れの様子を表現したものとされる。馬場全体を使い、棒を担いだ群衆の一糸乱れぬ動きが特徴である。地域では200年以上前に始まったと伝承されている。一時中断した時期もあったが、大正初期頃に従来のマチ棒を基礎として現在の型を再興したという。また、終戦直後、物資の乏しい時期には、保栄茂出身のハワイ移民者から衣装や小道具類等が送られるなど、多くの出身者や地域の人々に支えられ、今や保栄茂の“誇り”として内外に知られている。

 現在でも往時の風景を残し、地域に親しまれる馬場は、保栄茂の人々に大切にされている場所である

 Nmai horse tracks were established in various locations throughout the prefecture, and at these fields, people gathered for Ryukyu Keiba (competition to decide the most graceful horse in running), as well as large festivals and conventions. It is known that there were horse tracks in nine of the settlements in the past within Tomigusuku City. Among them, the Nmai horse track in Bin was the venue for one of the largest local events, the Juguya (harvest festival), and other events. The scenery of the horse tracks have changed very little from long ago.

 The Juguya harvest festival at the Nmai is held on August 15 and 16 of the lunar calendar every year, and is one of the largest events in Bin. It is the only event and place within Tomigusuku City where the Miruku god and large Hatagashira flags are displayed, a tug-of-war competition is held, and traditional dancing and other performances are shown. Particularly notable are these events held every six years in the years of the rabbit and rooster, when the Machi-bo is also performed.

 The Machi-bo is a group performance by the men of Bin using Bo staff. It is said that this local performance began over 200 years ago. There was a time when the Machi-bo was not performed, but it is said that at around the beginning of the Taisho Period, the basic movements from the traditional Machi-bo style were taken to create the style that we see today. During the period of hardship and scarce goods immediately after the war, costumes, props and other items were sent to Bin from Hawaii by the locals who migrated there. This tradition has been cherished and supported by the locals and those with ties to Bin and continues to be a source of pride for all.
